European Commissioner in charge of Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis said:
“If we do nothing, food waste could rise to over 120 million tonnes by 2020. It is important for Europeans to better understand the importance and benefits of food technologies and embrace them as a way to save money while lowering our environmental footprint. This video showcases the most common food technologies which help increase the shelf-life of our food.”
For decades, food technologies such as flash-pasteurisation, anti-oxidants, eco-friendly fridges and shock-freezing have helped preserve the quality, safety and taste of our food. We must now recognise their contribution to our sought-after healthy lifestyles and as tools to potentially reduce food waste.
This video, available in all EU languages, is being shown at the EXPO in Milan where the Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet! conference was held on 15 October 2015.
At the conference, Commissioner Andriukaitis met with high-level representatives from government, the scientific community, food-related organisations, NGOs and businesses to exchange best practices including the need and use of modern food technologies. Speakers include representatives from Food and Agriculture Association (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Slow Food, the European Federation of Food Banks, Nestlé, Colruyt etc.
